Principle Investigator of an FDA approved study of the safety and effectiveness of the Nd:YAG laser to remove incipient caries in living human subjects. This study was supported by a $24,208 grant from Sunrise Technologies Inc. of Freemont CA and is part of a collaborative effort with the
University of California at San Francisco, CA.

November 1989 One-month sabbatical to research epidemiology of TMJ disorders in the Central African Republic.
May 1987-June 1988 In an interdisciplinary study with the Department of Radiology, The Ohio State University College Hospitals and the College of Physics, Dr. Laurell was given a College of Dentistry research grant for
$2,385. In addition, he received a grant from the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Research Council in the form of usage time on the Hospital's Magnetic Resonance Imaging device. This study for which he was the primary investigator, investigated the effects of MRI on magnetic prosthetic dental implants. In addition to the above grants, at least one manufacturer of these devices donated
approximately $500 worth of supplies for use in the study.
July 1985-June 1986 Reproducibility of Interocclusal Record Materials - Dr. Laurell was awarded a $1,000 Ohio Dental Association Student Instructional Grant to hire a student to help with the study of interocclusal record
materials for which Dr. Laurell was the primary investigator.
March 1985-July 1985Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Temporomandibular Joint - in
an interdisciplinary study with the Departments of Anatomy and
Radiology, The Ohio State University Hospitals, for which Dr.
Laurell was the primary investigator. He was given a $4,500
research grant in the form of usage time on the Hospital's Magnetic
Resonance Imaging device. The grant came from The Ohio State
University Resonance Research Council.
September 1984- In an interdisciplinary study with the College of Pharmacy and
January 1985the Department of Oral Surgery, Dr. Laurell was awarded a $500
contract from Warner/Lambert Company to develop a device/method
for measuring the amount of swelling different pharmaceuticals
allowed following oral surgery procedures.
January 1984-January 1985 Comparison of Various Angles of the Mandible to The Condylar
Long Axis. The Ohio State University College of Dentistry
Research Grant - $500. Ohio Dental Association, Student
Instruction Research Grant - $1,000. Dr. Laurell was the primary
investigator for this project. The $1,000 ODA grant was used to
hire a student to assist in the research. The student won second
place for his presentation of the research in a table clinic presentation
at the 1985 Ohio State University Post-College Assembly.
